Lance Himes

Mr. Lance Himes, a long-time attorney with the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), was appointed director by Gov. John R. Kasich in June 2017. Himes has worked at ODH for more than 10 years and he values the unique opportunity to help lead ODH as the agency director.

During his tenure at ODH, Lance Himes has ascended steadily through the ranks of the Office of General Counsel, which serves as the agency’s legal department. He came to ODH as an assistant counsel in the Office of General Counsel and moved into three positions of increasing responsibility during the next seven years, most recently to General Counsel. As General Counsel, a position he has held since October of 2011, Mr. Himes managed all legal issues for the 1,300-person agency and oversaw several attorneys and office staff.

Before becoming General Counsel, Mr. Himes’s legal work focused primarily on environmental health and compliance issues. One of his chief accomplishments was the successful legal implementation of Ohio’s smoke- free workplace law and rules. He also played a leading role in an extensive overhaul of Ohio’s sewage treatment regulations; helping reform a set of laws that had not been updated since 1977.

Prior to joining ODH, Himes practiced law in Cincinnati for seven years, with a focus on environmental matters.  He graduated from Wittenberg University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and geography.  He received his law degree from the University of Cincinnati, College of Law.
